about

“What about that!” – DAVID RODIGAN (BBC 1XTRA)

“Brand new and brilliant” – LAUREN LAVERNE (BBC 6MUSIC)

Roots and reggae producer Wrongtom teams up with Hackney’s veteran breakbeat/ jungle MC’s on the new single “Follow Fashion”. Part of his latest piece of soundboy revival magic, this is the second single from their new album ‘In Time’.

“Follow Fashion” is a soundboy burial tune that celebrates the 30-year-long journey of the reputed innovators of jungle, breakbeat and D&B. Wrongtom explains: “They’ve never just jumped on a band wagon, they’ve been there at the start of things and helped invent jungle and breakbeat, drum and bass.” He elaborates: “The music changes around them but lyrically and aesthetically they remain true to their roots.” The raucously playful, “Follow Fashion” is a bashment track with a calypso twist that uses live instrumentation: drums, bass guitar, congas and brass, to create a timeless sound that’s ready to take on the clash contenders.

The ‘In Time’ project strips back the jungle, D&B, garage sound that the Ragga Twins are recognised for pioneering today, to take you back to the ‘80s reggae and dancehall landscape where they started out. Paying homage to the earlier days of the Ragga Twins, “Follow Fashion (J-Felix Remix)” finds Tru Thoughts label mate J-Felix applying an S.O.S Band feel with an opulent and electronic lilt for the dancefloor, a distinctive style that has attracted previous praise from Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC 6Music) to NME and Clash. J-Felix - who also plays guitar on the album - explains: “The style is UK soul/ boogie meets the sound system. It’s a meeting of some of my favourite styles of music.”

Rebuilding the softer edges with tough electronic drums for a weightier sound, “Follow Fashion (Murder He Wrote Remix)” is a dubby club cut revealing the producers first foray into the dancehall scene. Recognised for his unique take on UK bass music, Murder He Wrote has been championed by Toddla T, Jamz Supernova and Murlo, and been in the mix for BBC R1 and 1Xtra multiple times. Recalling his motivations for jumping in the studio, Murder He Wrote explains: “I’ve been a fan since the Duppy Writer album so was hyped to get to play a small part in Wrongtom’s project, let alone one featuring the actual living legends, The Ragga Twins.” Next up, the previously unreleased “Illegal Gunshot” is a re-voicing of a big Ragga Twins track from 1991 on the same rhythm as Wrongtom’s remix of General Levy’s “Incredible”.
